THE ORIGINS OF WATERMELON
Watermelon is very similar to melon in its botanical characteristics. The origins of watermelons can be found to the Nile Valley and Arabia. They are currently massively cultivating in Russia, Turkey and China.
THE VARIETIES OF WATERMELONS
Watermelon is consumed in various ways. In the United States it is preserved in vinegar, in Russia it is a component of beer while in Egypt it is used as fodder.
In France, there are several varieties such as Charleston Gray, Sugar Baby or Crimson Sweet.
The shapes are round or oblong and the green color can be zebra striped with a lighter yellow-green colour. There are now seedless varieties available.
HOW TO CHOOSE WATERMELON
To buy a watermelon, the heaviest ones are the most ripe. In fact, one can only be
sure of its maturity by appreciating the colour of its flesh, which must be very red. Watermelon can weigh 3 to 5 kg, so count 400g of watermelon per person for dessert and for a fruit salad for 4 people plan a 500g share.
